Year End Update
Business Craft | 6 minute read
For the past several years, we have been developing and sharing information to support trade contractors focused on improving execution of the business of their trade.
Our goal is developing and sharing information to help trade contractors improve execution of their trade's business needed to sustain consistent growth and scaling of a trade contractor. Sustaining consistent growth and scaling is necessary to achieve full economic value necessary to fund the dreams that motivated a trade person to start a new trade contractor.
Craft of Execution newsletter began as emails called Business Craft. The list of trade contractors became too long for BCC emails. Business Craft emails were transitioned to this platform and renamed Craft of Execution.
Over the last couple of years we have over 3,200 posts sharing information, answering questions, and interacting with contractors and developers across the US on X as Full Value Subcontractor, @FullValueSub.
From this content and our daily 1-on-1 support working with trade contractors an effective standardized communication, training, and leadership framework that applies to all trades has developed. We call this framework The Prime Directive Business System.
Since the last Craft of Execution post, we have been building The Prime Directive Business System within a Notion Template. By deploying The Prime Directive Business System within the Notion platform PDBS will be easy for a trade contractor to deploy, implement and nurture an execution centric culture within the structure of The Prime Directive Business System.
Trade contractors will find the standardized communication, training, and leadership components of The Prime Directive Business System to be natural and authentic for a trade person. Meaning no new skills will be needed to learn the PDBS system.
We love trade contractors and are not interested in changing them. We just want to see them work more efficiently within an execution centric culture. We want to see them work smarter, not harder. Enjoy more from their business, not less.
For example, trade people have had to learn how to use BlueBeam, laser levels and software controlled CNC machines. Notion is just another tool. A tool that does not have a steep learning curve to use.
Numeric accounting chart of accounts in accounting systems mirror the format and functionality of the various numeric sections of Specifications.
General Accepted Accounting Practices, or GAAP, provides a basic structure for accounting the way OSHA provides a basic structure for safety.
Business meetings focus office team members on business challenges and other items the same way tool box talks focus trade people on job site challenges and safety.
Before a laborer can become a trade person, they must learn the language of a trade and how its activities fit together. The same applies to team members new to a trade contractor’s office. New team members must learn the language of a trade's business and how the stakeholders fit together.
The Prime Directive Business System provides a standardized communication framework that develops, and nurtures efficient communication needed to build an execution centric culture that can support consistent growth and scaling of a trade contractor.
Efficient communication supports a standardized training platform that is less disruptive and more efficient for both team members and team leaders.
With efficient communication and training, team leaders have a standardized framework for supporting team members with challenging tasks and developing and executing the strategic goals required by the business of a trade.
With the content, systems, and support developed over a many years organized into The Prime Directive Business System, we can better focus and structure the content shared via Craft of Execution newsletter and on X via @FullValueSub in 2025. We believe that better focused and structured content will provide more value to trade contractors.
